Time Machine 05:01
now, the unraveling fortune favours fools truth, elusive and confused need, stripped naked now to fend for what it wants hope, in a chokehold holdin on show me show me how this is better now so much i can't see tell me tell me now who comes after you who comes after me form and future born from embers burnin low how to know what doin need get done fun, so hard won on days forgotten soon how many moons hidin faces, howlin tunes everyone a time machine one foot in memory, one in dream straddling the moment when what's to come becomes now and then laid upon that barren rock another one fought to beat the clock longed for a pass begged the devil's sympathy broke the hourglass and cried, "it went too fast" show me show me how this is better now so much i can't see tell me tell me now who comes after you who comes after me

True Light 05:00
too late sudden fate moved in like the wind takes some time to know people go who's born and who has been spin around the sun hand in hand as one live too long life upon a shelf the wake behind the boat closing in upon itself wave upon wave erase the traces then in dreams we pull apart the seams the fabric of our lives comes apart before our eyes wake up to thread the needle into place spin around the sun hand in hand as one city lights had you in their sights sirens in the night something wasn't right only a rider on an empty bus silent now you’re still heard every song you played every single word dissolving in waves and light embracing us true light beacon break up the fight true light break the day from night true light Illuminate our oversight turn the red flag white surrender to your true light

Sat under the neon sign Normandie without an I sky turned blue to maroon that afternoon the Angelus Rosedale graveyard in the dark one day may they meet again near Echo Park

motherless sunrise summon a trail through their eyes guide them through the brush burn away the shameful blush like so many before this fight became a war strength born in a rush bred from weakness to endure dawn from no horizon neither sky nor ground orphan light upon them nothing lost or found motherless sunrise whether desert, whether sea sand and water: mud whether drought, whether flood what do the stars see? are we trapped, are we free? make it shine, let it rust like she said, we are dust drawn from no horizon not to see/unseen nothing set or rising nothing pure/unclean

as it comes clear and bright full of light as it goes it becomes trouble all this time thought there were two me - and you as it turns out i was seeing double all this time on our feet, on our hands in our heads becomes trouble scattered light breaking up out of sight can it be i'm just seeing double trouble is the double talk double negative relative two reveal what single eyes conceal

we spent one last night upon the elephants In tents adrift atop the backs of beasts while we sleep forest dreams spring beneath granite feet as we left the eldest of the herd came forth to tell the truth without a word we have seen your bloody tracks can't carry you on our backs traveled heavy through the centuries trampled everything beneath your feet and if days become more desperate know the elephants will not forget they won't forget will we bow before the common good? forego all that we could for what we should? they have seen  our bloody tracks can't carry us on their backs what consequence we know not yet turn tomorrow from a child's regret even if the outcome seems set know the elephants will not forget they won't forget

about

In memory of Justin Haynes and Adam Balsam

credits

released October 27, 2023

A collection of songs ruminating on the irresistible urge and ultimate futility of longing for the past, haunted recollections of paths nearly taken, resilience and hope in the face of existential threat, the wisdom of elephants, confusion, depression, parenthood, childhood, and baseball.

At the onset of the pandemic, I upgraded my out of date, pirated recording software to a proper 21st century daw, sold some much loved, faithful gear to fund the purchases of a nice ribbon mic and complementary pairs of vintage synths and drum machines, and went into full studio rat mode. I dug into the songs I had been writing on mostly nylon string guitar, and began recording this album. It was a slow, solitary and meditative experience, I learned a lot, and was very happy to enlist the help of some true a-listers. Whoever this finds, thank you for listening.
