I began writing this piece on piano in 2015. Every now and then I'd sit down and add a new bit, and at one point thought it could be a never-ending composition that would just keep expanding. Eventually I came to a point where the ending asserted itself and I decided to cap it there, but who knows, maybe there's still more to come. While writing it, I often thought back to my childhood piano lessons (which I didn't love), but remembered being inspired by learning Edvard Grieg's Puck. I was fascinated by the different sections, and encouraged by my teacher (the amazing Cathy Mitro) to invent a narrative that went along with the evolution of the composition. I didn't have a clear narrative in mind for The Bell Tower, but definitely had a lot of imagery and story elements coming to mind as I went along. Hopefully it will stir some in you as well.

The title and cover refer to a 14th century church and bell tower in Göttingen, Germany, near to where my brother Wojtek lived, and where he took my son and I to visit during a trip in 2016 while we stayed with him. That trip was the last time I saw him, as he died suddenly and unexpectedly a few months later. His wife shared a dream she had after his death, in which he appeared in the doorway at the base of that tower as a child dressed in white, and that she felt a deep sense of reassurance of his presence watching over us somehow.
